Selling Music Equipment

Everyone has some stuff in their studio that they are no longer using. In my case, it is just stuff that gets in the way and clutters things up. For instance, I have several microhones but I only use one or two. Every time I need a mic, I run through all of them to see which one sounds best, but I find that I always end up with my favorites. Why bother having the others around? Why not hone my skills and learn how to use my favorites and be more productive?

This brings me to the subject of selling equipment. There are many ways to sell your old unused stuff, Craigslist, Ebay, Newspaper, consignment, trade, etc. Some methods work better than others, and the item you are selling also has a lot to do with the best way to sell. For instance, if you are selling your old bass cabinet, shipping is going to be a ton. So Ebay is most likely out of the question.

Get the item Ready to sell
First of all, test the item out. Does it still work? Or has 10 years of sitting in the dusty musty basement wreaked havoc on your delicate gear? Clean it up and make it look as pretty as you can. Find any documentation original boxes, etc. that you may have for the item. Original manual and original box can really ad value when selling items. Make sure you have all of the original power supplies, cables, connectors, license codes, etc. that came with the item. Box everything up and get ready to say goodbye.

Research
Do your homework on the item. Find out what they are selling for on Ebay, make sure you have the correct make, model number and specifics on the item. Find out what they are selling for brand new (if still available). Be honest with yourself about the condition, you know that soon as Joe musicians looks at he's going to notice every single flaw and want to lower the price.
