Taking Notes

One of the thing that really can be frustrating in the home studio, is forgetting how you got that sound. I always keep session notes. This way I can go back and recreate something if I need to.

Some things to keep track of are:

  • Effects Settings
  • Microphones used
  • Tempo's (BPM)
  • Flaws that need to be fixed
  • Instruments used
  • Direct or mic
  • Amp settings
  • Microphone distance
  • EQ Settings

I will also take notes when mixing down. I like to keep track of all the effects used, spots that need fixing, ideas I have as I'm listening of ways to improve the song.

You'll find your notes can be really valuable when you go back to work on a song that you recorded six months ago.
